Carly and the Reaperman Menus

Client

Carly and the Reaperman Main Menu

Year

2020

We worked with the Odd Raven Studios to help bring their game to market on Quest! They had an existing game but it was plug in and play and for release on playstation but a main menu was needed for the more complicated flows and multiplayer bits on Quest!

The Previous Menu

This was fine for the old functionality but now with playing there was single player, multiplayer and then saves to do!
We also had to keep the UI in the same style so that was the main brief!

Information Architecture Update

We handle multiplayer a little differently in VR, usually there is a room system. This is due to tech with playfab so we new the play menu would get much deeper.

Naturally we split the flows for single and multiplayer and there they split futher into new / continue etc.

Main Menu

VR devices work best when the viewing area is more square in ratio so we tried to keep things short and squat for the UI. With the new menu, we preserve everything but extend the play menus.

Play Menu

Separated into columns to make it clearer what the options were. Since the player can play on their own or with others it's important to show what is multiplayer.

With playfab tech, rooms are either hosted or joined so those are the most important to specify intent before save files.

Join Game

Joining rooms takes a digit system, so we used a simple traditional keypad with fields for the player to enter numbers in and then enabled the button to join if all fields were filled.

Waiting Screen

This is for the person who joined a game and is waiting for the host to select what they are playing.

Error Screen

Sometimes joining does not work, we wanted to keep the error flows simple so we used a generic error with the room code they used reiterated to let them check if it was correct.

Load Saves Screen

We explored different ways of loading screens for the save files. Some more graphical, some more organized with save games to select and then do an action or to have relevant actions in each save file.

I then mocked it up in the UI art style.

Room Settings Screen

These screens are shown for the person hosting who is waiting for their friend to join and once they do then the screens to select a new game, the role or to continue an old game.

And a layout with more larger buttons to select and then do an action.

It was a short project overall, the guys at Odd Raven were super nice! We wanted to keep the work as slim as possible while still making it user friendly!
